Two half brothers, one a pilot, the other a repairman at the plane factory of their father, are in a disagreement due to the envy of the younger brother, son of the first wife of their father. Then both brothers fall in love with the same woman; this causes more conflict between the two, making worse an already tense situation.

Distressed by the uncertainties of a precarious job, Carlo falls prey to an ambiguous financier who, taking advantage of his naivety, offers him unexpected financial help. Carlo accepts, but it doesn't take him long to realize that he has fallen into the trap of an unscrupulous loan shark. It is useless to flee and try to disappear: the heavy threats and humiliations inflicted on his family will force him to commit an extreme act.

Giancarlo Del Monaco’s atmospheric production brings to colorful life a 19th-century mining camp during the California Gold Rush. At the center of the action is the good-hearted bar owner Minnie, sung by Barbara Daniels, who takes a motherly interest in the miners. Plácido Domingo is Dick Johnson, also known as the bandit Ramerrez, who falls in love with Minnie. Sherrill Milnes sings Jack Rance, the sheriff who is not only determined to capture Ramerrez but also wants Minnie for himself. Bloodshed, a crooked poker game, a snowstorm, and a near lynching ensue before Minnie and her bandit-turned-lover can ride off to start a new life. Leonard Slatkin conducts one of Puccini’s most colorful scores.

La Fanciulla del West by Puccini, the first western lyric opera, was performed in Amsterdam in 2009, staged by Nikolaus Lehnhoff. In this version, which is now available on medici.tv, the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest is conducted by Carlo Rizzi. Eva Maria Westbroek plays the part of Minnie and Lucio Gallo plays Jack Rance.

Puccini's musical vision of the American West is vividly brought to life in Giancarlo Del Monaco's atmospheric production. Deborah Voigt is Minnie, the girl of the title and owner of a bar in a Californian mining camp.

During the 18th century, the empress of Russia Catherine the Great sends her lover Count Alexei Orloff to kidnap her rival for the throne, the pretender Elizabeth, Princess Tarakanova, from Venice. However, Orloff ends up falling in love with the princess.

Miriam Rossi arrives at a small village to take possession of a well located hotel that she inherited from her grandfather. She is rudely received by the Mayor, who controls everybody there and owns the only other inn for the tourists brought to the island by a modern cruiser.
